Press Release by PATTY XENOS DESIGN
MONTREAL, June 13, 2023. – After more than three years collaborating with local artisans, Groupe Grandio is proud to announce the reopening of the must-visit Moishes steakhouse, as of June 14, 2023 in Montreal’s Quartier international. This Montreal institution in its new location remains true to its roots and the highest quality service in a new contemporary atmosphere, in the image of future generations.
Founded in 1938 by Moishe Lighter, Moishes was sold to Groupe Grandio in 2018, which has since made an investment of over $5m to orchestrate the reopening of the Montreal institution in its new 7,000-square-foot location. Closed in 2020 due to the pandemic, this iconic venue will now be able to accommodate over 200 people by a team of 80 employees.
« Moishes is much more than a restaurant, it’s a unique story of courageous, authentic and passionate immigrant-to-Montreal entrepreneurs who know where they come from, but are even prouder to be Montrealers. Groupe Grandio had the responsibility of preserving the restaurant’s soul and cachet, and the opportunity to create a new chapter. It’s one of Montreal’s oldest institutions, still going strong after 85 years, thanks to its ability to renew itself and its consistent quality offering. We are proud to bring it into the future with our expertise, » says Jean Bédard, President and CEO of Groupe Grandio.
Inspiring Moishes’ future through its past
Moishes has lived through the different eras that have shaped the Montreal of today. Groupe Grandio strategically reflected each of the restaurant’s spaces to recall Moishes’ memories and traditions through art, thanks to the collaboration of local artists. The design of the new concept was realized by the firm Patty Xenos Design had already worked with Leonard Lighter, son of Moishes founder, for the renovation of the same institution in 2011.
.
« The new location is dynamic, bold and very bright. Normally, this is a great asset, but our challenge was to recreate the warmth, comfort and unpretentious quality environment of Moishes. We chose a timeless design to keep the legend and its DNA alive. Chic in its simplicity, we emphasized the use of responsible materials. What’s more, we brought back original objects like the pewter chandeliers and ceiling tiles, as well as the butcher’s scale that will be on display in the open kitchen, » adds Patty Xenos, President and Creative Director at PXDI.
The restaurant is divided into four rooms, a bar area, two separate dining rooms and a private room, to recreate the warm, intimate ambience of the former space on Saint-Laurent. As soon as they arrive, customers will be able to contemplate and browse a mural by Jason Wasserman that tells the story of Moishes through the ages to the present day. In the bar area, the centerpiece reuses onyx from the original bar. Photographs by David Leonard Sidaway can be found in the first dining room, along with the historic map of Montreal from the National Archives, also recovered from the old space, while temporary original collections from Art Bank will be presented in the second dining room. Finally in the VIP room, a specially created work by internationally renowned Montreal artist, Martin Monet.
Authenticity and consistent quality on the menu
The restaurant’s menu, which retains several dishes from the original Eastern European-inspired menu, has been revisited by chef Murteza Talu. So, in addition to USDA Prime grade grills, the most prestigious of this category on the market, a variety of new dishes will be added seasonally that could include, among others, fish and vegetarian dishes. As a reminder, Groupe Grandio promotes local purchasing.
