Mobile stand for Montréal Grande Bibliothèque

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

As the heart of knowledge in the city, the Grande Bibliothèque de Montréal is committed to providing information and research to the general public. It was in this vein that the library sought to equip itself with a new stand to present new resources and documentation, thus encouraging interaction between people and employees. The unit had to be freestanding, easily movable, and feature screens and storage space.

Based on these needs for ergonomics, efficiency, modularity and durability, FOR. sketched out this pentagonal stand reminiscent of a house, an inviting landmark. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, the light metal frame integrates a LED lighting fixture, signage, as well as a protective plexiglass panel put in place during the pandemic. A lockable cabinet facilitates storage of the computer, keyboard and mouse, wires and extension cords, as well as employees’ personal belongings. Fully electrified, the unit lights up and comes to life with its screens thanks to a single connection.

Small details enhance the user experience: a sliding shelf for the keyboard, arms for the two screens, a stool that can be stored in the stand for transport and storage, and even a cut-out at the bottom of the Russian plywood for comfortable seating. FOR. also opted for a three-wheel system instead of four, for smoother movement.

To cover the surface area of the Grande Bibliothèque and its many needs, two units were ordered; FOR. decided to create the second as a mirror of the first. In this way, when the two stands are used together, a discussion takes place between them. Whether back to back or at 90 degrees to each other, they cover a wide area of visibility and interaction with the public. Their book-display fronts draw people in and highlight the subjects to be discussed.

Since their conception, the Grande Bibliothèque has used both stands on a daily basis, proving their success with everyone.
