GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 15th edition
Discipline : Interior Design
Categories : Education, Institution & Healthcare / University & Higher Education : Silver Certification
Situated on the first floor of the Education Building at McGill University, this formerly conventional library space was re-envisioned to address the contemporary needs of teaching, studying and learning. The design consists of interwoven yet distinct study areas that promote discovery and reflection while creating different settings for co-creation, collaboration and social exchange.
The program was developed in close consultation with the shareholders and users to respond to their programmatic and technological needs for an underutilised floor area of the 1970’s brutalist concrete building. Although the space presented many challenges, such as minimal exterior windows, poor acoustics and the need to integrate contemporary building amenities as mechanical ventilation and electrical and data services, the space was revitalized as a mix of powered formal and informal work areas that are defined not necessarily by walls, but by colour and design.
