MOUNTAINSIDE CONSTRUCTION
Bromont, Summer 2021
Imagined by Muuk Architecture, this house is located on a beautiful site on a steep shoulder of Mont Bernard. With their majestic presence, the neighboring forests and hills inspired the creation process to include the natural surroundings as core elements of this architecture.
The land, falling steeply toward the South, offers a small flat area with open views of the distant hills and the forested mountains. On this ideal feature sits the house, delicately invited to dwell amongst the trees.
The escarpment, although beautiful, definitely involved significant challenges. The building had to be designed around the particular topography, away from the dangerously steep sections or the impressively massive trees on the hillside. As the house is built on the only flat area, the terrace extends above the ground, and the pool appears to be hung from above, allowing swimmers to feel part of the canopy and intimately close to nature.
Located on a dead end street in the Val des Irlandais in Bromont, Québec, the house benefits from fine and durable materials and shows clear lines and marked contrasts. The living room, dining room and kitchen, as well as the more functional areas (mudroom, laundry room), occupy the ground floor while the more intimate bedrooms are located upstairs. The master suite extends on a terrace with stunning views of the towering maple trees and the infinity pool. A central element of this project, the pool is made of shuttered concrete that used rough hemlock planks to create a textured finish reminiscent of the color and bark of the nearby trees. The extremity of the pool features a tempered glass so that no views are wasted.
Concrete is a core element of this project. Used for its unique texture, rugged beauty and durability, the concrete of the house catches the eyes. Aside from the pool, it was used for the floor and the finishing of the kitchen walls.
Inside like outside, the use of white, black and grey creates a house that stands out from the forest and that feels light and luminous. The transparency of panels and the play with volumes allow for an ensemble that is light and delicate. Marking the transition from cedar (used inside, outside and on the roof) to steel, an impressive skylight fills the entrance with sun.
The South side, with all its openings, benefits from a passive solar design to naturally heat the polished concrete floors which acts as a thermal mass. Floors are also equipped with radiant heating. In direct continuity with the living areas, again to the South, furnished terraces are equipped with glass railings that allow house and forest to blend together. The numerous windows are large and well-positioned, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside spaces.TECHNICAL SHEET
