GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 16th edition

Categories : Residential Building / Private House > 2 000 pi2 (> 185 m2) : Gold Certification

Built on a through lot, Maison Carlier is an urban densification project in the heart of Little Italy.

The project takes advantage of the singularity of this lot accessible by two streets. It is built in place of a parking lot, accessible from Henri-Julien Street.
This urban house, complements the construction of an existing sixplex on Drolet Street. The whole, organized around a central courtyard, creates here a two-headed multiplex, a new typology for this atypical lot.

The project is defined by the meeting of two bodies of building, a volume of suspended brick crossed by a vertical block of wood and glass. The fragmentation of the project allows its integration into a disjointed urban context.

Floating brick volume, the main building body echoes the simple geometry of the surrounding buildings.
The ochre brick facing on the front facade is revealed as a weave interspersed with black lines that tie into the frame.
Fine framing of the street facade, the black brick side walls unfold in a vertical match.
The brick envelope dematerializes on the courtyard, the rear facade opens onto the trees in the heart of the block.

At once the plinth, on which the main body of the building rests, but also crowning the building, the glass and wood volume pierces the brick mass. This vertical extrusion accompanies the ascent inside the different levels of the house.
The curve of wood guides the entrance into the house, on the first floor, the mahogany volume penetrates to the heart of the spaces that are organized around it.

From the entrance appears the staircase whose work resumes the gestures applied to the exterior; meeting of materials and interweaving of forms. Floating masses of wood, the steps are supported by a curved stringer. The handrail like a ribbon unfolds on the three levels without interruption.

On the first floor takes place an office that can be transformed into an independent studio. Non-traditional distribution of uses on the different levels, the bedrooms are organized on the second floor naturally less bright. Mixing materials between fabrics, wallpaper, wood or ceramics, these textures enrich the space and participate in the enveloping atmosphere of the place.

In contrast, the living rooms are located on the third floor very windowed on the outside and bathed in light. Completely open to each other, the variations in ceiling heights delineate the uses. The glass extrusion reappears here, a well of light in the double height space expands towards the sky and the canopy of trees. In the double height, the staircase gives access to the roof terrace. The views of the city are revealed as you ascend.

The third level consists of a refined and very porous envelope inside which elements with singular shapes, tones and materials are woven. Curved island in fluted wood, furniture facade in lined glass, velvet armchair and tinted glass light fixture, so many components that make it a fleshed-out architecture.

Architecture made of simple volumes in adequacy with its context, this one stands out by a work of the material and its implementation. It then becomes an expressive architecture whose careful details and variety of textures are the breadcrumb.
