MAISON AU PIGNON

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Residential Building / Private House > 2 000 pi2 (> 185 m2) : Gold Certification
Located in Gatineau’s Aylmer district, the Maison au Pignon is set among large, mature trees to welcome a young family from the region.
The project deploys several energy-efficient strategies to achieve Novoclimat 2 and LEED for Homes certifications. Firstly, the building volume is limited to minimize air-conditioning requirements. A compact volume was designed to accommodate the careful organization of living spaces to the south and service spaces to the north. Slightly elongated on the east-west axis, this volume provides an ideal profile for the natural lighting of interior spaces, while conserving a maximum of the building’s accumulated energy. In addition to these geometric attentions, targeted and measured technical efforts are made through the design of the envelope to optimize the thermal performance of the whole. In addition to enhanced insulation, the residence features high-performance openings protected by carefully placed eaves. The residence’s choice of materials also incorporates a number of elements based on local, sustainable and circular-economy sourcing. All these considerations demonstrate how the integration of energy-efficient strategies can contribute to the aesthetics of a residence to make it a functional and attractive living environment.
