A magnificent adventure that began with the acquisition of a century-old duplex by a bachelor and his best friends, has taken on a whole new dimension as the home of his sweetheart and their daughter. The top floor of the building, with its old-world charm, was renovated to suit the needs and style of this new family. For Catherine Séguin Design, the challenge was to enlarge the space from the inside by adding a bedroom, and to create a functional kitchen without resorting to the exorbitant costs of an extension. The kitchen and dining room were merged by a vast 10-foot island, in a new space. The living room, previously in a separate room, found its place next to the kitchen, freeing up space for an office and possible bedroom. This reorganization brought the three main living spaces together, giving the resident cook the opportunity to interact with the rest of the family. The dining room table is just the right size for the family’s daily routine, and can be extended into the living room to seat 8. The refined Scandinavian-inspired style, juxtaposed with old-fashioned elements, brings warmth and tranquility to the new parents. The minimalist design makes it easy and fun to integrate color accents and toys without overloading the space. The stone wall and brick chimney preserved in the kitchen add texture and grandiosity to the open-plan living space. The use of the same heating ceramic floor in all three rooms provides visual enlargement. In addition, a long wall of white storage offers functionality, housing a coffee and breakfast area, a concealed desk, a pantry, as well as storage for work and sports equipment.
In the bathroom, the skylight over the beautiful shower is the central element, inviting you to escape. Embellished with a cascading green plant, it adds a touch of exoticism and serenity, while the rain shower evokes the gentle murmur of a tropical downpour. Maintaining this skylight was not an easy decision, but it brings joy to the occupants, who enjoy gazing up at the sky to anticipate the weather at first light. A few adjustments to the bathroom walls and entrance door, as well as to the mini-laundry room, enabled the integration of a large ceramic shower open to the space, aligned with the floor level, as well as a large bathtub, previously absent. Noble, warm materials envelop the space, creating an atmosphere of comfort and well-being. This bathroom even has a secondary entrance to the master bedroom, where a king-size bed complements the sleek design. The wood flooring has been preserved and carefully sanded to maintain the authenticity of the old Montreal apartments. The black glass doors, characteristic of each room, as well as the woodwork, have also been preserved for their period appearance and the luminosity they bring to the interior.
Authentic style characterizes this family home, where comfort, functionality and durability dictated the choices made. Every storage element has been designed by Catherine Séguin Design to make daily life easier, with every object having its precise place and every cubic centimeter optimized. A warm and cozy nest for a family united by love and happiness.
