Renovation of a secondary residence
Located in Bromont in the Eastern Townships, near the mountain and the ski slopes, the two-storey residence is part of a picket fence style condominium complex. The interior, designed in the 2000s, had little visual, spatial or aesthetic relationship with the exterior, creating a sense of contrast and disconnection between the interior and exterior.
The chosen approach, based on the modulation of natural light, sought to unify and amplify the spatial perception.
Inspired by the outdoor context and the clients\’ needs for a relaxed environment for themselves and their guests, the concept is centered on retractable panels with adjustable porosity. They are used to modulate in a refined way the relationship between the interior and the exterior according to the desired ambiances, the needs of intimacy, the activities, the time of day, the weather, etc.
Louvers, whose aesthetic is both traditional and contemporary, cover the walls. They slide horizontally or vertically. In the double height space, a mechanical system without motorization was designed specifically for the project. The louvers are coupled with opaque panels that serve both as counterweights and to shade the windows located in the upper part. The sliding elements are moved manually without effort through a system of pulleys and steel cables developed in collaboration with a manufacturer.
A particular shape, a truncated circle, is repeated in many of the objects designed for the project (furniture, rugs, outdoor Japanese steps, etc.), which accentuates the sense of continuity.
A series of mobile and stackable plywood furniture designed for the project are distributed throughout the rooms and serve as benches, bookcases, bedside tables, etc. These objects are modular and multifunctional.
