The project Les Cours – Phase II is located in a rather uniform residential fabric of district Vieux-Terrebonne, essentially composed of single-family homes and small duplexes of 1 to 2 floors, mostly built for workers at the beginning of the 20th century. At the request of the City, any integration of new projects must take into consideration the historical characteristics of this modest heritage.
In an inclusive approach, the project team was able to propose a unifying concept around common courtyards for this architectural insertion which sought to unite with respect to the heritage character of the sector and a contemporary architectural vision.
As part of the Les Cours Phase II project, a first volume more advanced on the street has been limited to 2 floors and aligns with the templates of the adjacent duplexes both for the alignment in height and for the dimensions of the windows. In response to the painted wood clapboard, the predominant cladding of the sector, the chosen exterior finish of this first volume on the street consists of raw cedar clapboard that will age naturally and give a distinctive patina to the volume.
A second volume is introduced, set back from the first, with a contemporary architectural treatment. This three-story volume, with an exterior finish in Corten steel, weaves an aesthetic link with Les Cours Phase I, to create a coherent whole.
The two volumes of Phase II are joined at the front by an exterior staircase protected by anodized and perforated aluminum panels.
The architectural design of the two phases is based on the idea of a shared courtyard accessible from a common passage crossing the two lots. This urban link, located in the middle of a large urban quadrilateral, is based on the idea of weaving in its heart a new community made up of future residents and local residents.
