We are delighted to present our ecological architecture project, Les Bases, designed by the Écorce Architecture Écologique team. This 148m2 (1590ft2) home was specially created for Meggie and Jasmin, a couple with a passion for architecture who both work in the field as designers and general contractors. Les Bases is an evolving family home that embodies a shared vision of the building’s integration into its ecosystem and context.

We designed the project drawing our inspiration from the rich pavilion and village fabric of the St-Denis-sur-Richelieu region, home to magnificent heritage homes full of character. Our intention was to create a unique habitat that blends harmoniously into its surroundings, while respecting the existing architectural heritage. We incorporated and reinterpreted singular elements representative of this context, such as rooftop chimneys and the interplay of volumes. The architectural design of the volumes is inspired by the old houses in the surrounding area, emphasizing sobriety through symmetry and functional separation. A low, delicate volume accommodates the night spaces, while a higher, predominant volume distinguishes the living spaces. The entrance is located at the heart of the house, allowing transversality from front to back.

The project was conceptualized according to passivhaus principles, achieving an air change rate per hour of 0.27 CAH@50Pa and taking advantage of bioclimatic benefits such as solar orientation and natural ventilation. Openings have been carefully designed to optimize natural light without causing overheating. The choice of materials complements this approach by providing significant thermal mass. Numerous decisions have been taken to promote and democratize ecological construction. First of all, the ecological aspect was put forward by building a high-performance envelope, with 30% more insulation than the building code, enabling a score of 47 on the Home Energy Rating System scale. This means that Les Bases is 53% more energy-efficient than a standard new home. In addition, principles such as advanced framing, which reduces the amount of structure required for construction while maximizing insulation, and the use of a monolithic slab on grade, help to reduce the project’s carbon footprint, its environmental impact and ensure its sustainability and resilience for years to come. The residence is in the process of achieving LEED Platinum certification, the highest level of excellence. Particular attention has been paid to the choice of materials and components for the home, focusing on their durability, eco-friendliness and recycled nature to ensure continuity with period construction, while favoring local products and suppliers to create a healthy place to live that respects the environment and its community.

The goal was to create a home that feels like it has always been part of this country landscape. We are proud to welcome you to Les Bases, our warm, eco-friendly home, ready to offer you a sustainable and comfortable environment.
