GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 7th édition
The restoration project converting Hangar 16 into a 4 star hotel of timeless and international character stands out by its fluid design, ingenuity, and by the way it reviews certain principles: playing with full and empty spaces, remolding volumes and ignoring a number of conventions such as gravity.
With the enthusiasm and the confidence legitimized by the student status, the bedroom, a conventional space, is revisited to become an ode to minimalism and Japanese architecture; with industrial materials, the built-in bed, not to mention the subtle reference to the Swiss chalet, thanks to the fine beams and sloping roof.
The open lobby features an imposing black staircase blending into a decor that pays tribute to a few modern architecture classics; Bertoïa tools for the bar customers, Swedish style armchairs, enticing perspectives; the whole deconstructed with harmony and control.
The outdoor terrace also shines through with an innovative design and proposes and uncommon outside access. A sense of movement, migration and constant motion is felt throughout the space. This inspiring and inspired project fully deserves the FERDIE’s Student Award 2013.
