“Jardin d’hiver” is a thoughtful and yet simple response to a longing question in architecture : how could we create a comfortable space connected so closely to the exterior while being exposed to the harshness of the cold season? Inspired by the geodesic domes of Buckminster Fuller, the “Jardin d’hiver,” which stands for ‘winter garden’ in French, is the result of a sensible design process in order to provide a small-scale, warmful and unique rooftop to the enclosed terrace. Like a veil of wood, the organic and complex structure is made of CNC-machined veneer glued together and that can sustain remarkably to forces in torsion. Each element is connected to each other with a special joint that is carefully detailed.
The structure is covered by marine-grade transparent vinyl which allows the customers to contemplate the surrounding murals or enjoy the intensity of a snowstorm while seating comfortably on the heated benches and warmed space. The “Jardin d’hiver” is a unique and contemporary architectural response with a complex structure but made possible with simple and yet accessible materials. As small-scale as it is, it yet innovates in pushing further the boundaries of how we can connect even furthermore interior and exterior.
Designed to be disassemble at the end of winter, the wooden vault is in 6 sections that detach from each other, which facilitates transport and storage during the summer. The same goes for the heated benches, there are ten pieces in all that form the two benches on either side of the dome. A simple system for connecting the electrical heating elements has also been put in place for connecting from one room to another. All the wooden elements are protected with a lacquer that is used for boat hulls, ensuring the durability for the elements in view of its exposure to the weather.
