GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 16th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Residential Building / Apartment & Condo ≥ 10 storeys : Bronze Certification
Le Huppé is a housing complex located in Quebec City on Lebourgneuf Boulevard. Set between two existing buildings, the project takes advantage of both the urban and natural character of the location, being adjacent to the Parc de l’Escarpement. The North-South orientation allows for a maximum of sunlight inside the units, and the typical floor was thought out in order to optimize the visual openings, despite the presence of existing buildings on both sides. In the living rooms of the units, the setback formed by the angled wall directs the views towards the city skyline and makes the balcony a large and pleasant space. This architectural design is transposed to the elevation by a set of vertical sections of masonry and angled balconies that follow one another and gives rhythm to the whole project. The brick sections are embellished with a linear pattern of recessed bricks.
With 187 rental units, Le Huppé is the first WELL Gold-certified multi-residential building in Canada. This certification puts Le Huppé’s occupants at the heart of its concerns and focuses on the comfort, health and well-being of its users. A Well project must meet several design criteria divided into ten concepts, including the provision of natural light, active transportation, community spirit, etc. The Well criteria are achieved through the design of thoughtful common spaces that can accommodate all the services required by the program. Meeting other criteria, including air and water quality, thermal comfort and materials, Le Huppé certainly is a project that is mindful of its environmental impact.
