GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 7th édition

Once you lay eyes on Sleigh Bench, you just have to have it. Inspired by the Canadian sleigh, this entry bench of Nordic flavor features a curved design that blends traditional with contemporary. Made of natural cherry wood from Quebec, his piece of furniture is infused with a rare simplicity worthy of the great sculptures of Brancusi.

We note with some amusement the knitted cushion inserted on the top part for added comfort. Its snowflake and reindeer patterns are subtle details that accentuate the cultural aspect of the piece. The knitting is a charming touch available in four colors.

The utilitarian bench was selected by Hotel La Ferme for the hotel lobby and changing rooms.

Besides enjoying the humor and the nod to neocultural references, the jury also found that the Sleigh Bench brought out wood’s esthetic and emotional qualities. But foremost, the project earned the Best Use of Wood Award in the Product Design category for its remarkable use of the wood bending technique; this technique gives the product resistance and highlights the material’s properties. All this and drawing on Quebec imagery, skillfully adding a contemporary touch.
