« L’Anneau-Phare »

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Art & Photography : People’s Choice Award

Categories : Art Projects / Visual art : Platinum Winner

Categories : Photo / Landscape Photography : Silver Certification

« L’Anneau-Phare » a unique art installation, was designed in 2022 by the firm CCxA Landscape Architects (formerly Claude Cormier and Associates).

« L’Anneau » is a custom-designed installation and a unique testament to the symbolic significance of Place Ville Marie (PVM), the birthplace of Montreal’s architectural modernity. This elegant, 30-meter-diameter circular airborne artwork, made of stainless steel and floating between towers 2/3 and 4 of PVM, is a site-specific installation that embodies both monumentality and humility. Framing the iconic view along McGill College Avenue, toward the gates of McGill University, Mount Royal, and its characteristic cross, « L’Anneau » enhances the architectural composition and the timeless character of Place Ville Marie.

« L’Anneau » commemorates the 60th anniversary of Montreal’s modernist transformation and symbolizes the deep connection between the city, its citizens, and its visitors. As a metropolitan marker, it helps strengthen the sense of belonging, inviting everyone to feel “Montrealer.”
« L’Anneau » attracts both residents and tourists who come to admire and photograph its unique architecture. In tribute to Claude Cormier, the photographer from the tourism industry created a piece titled “The Ring-Lighthouse.” This photo, taken on April 23, 2023, two days before the presentation of the Distinction Award by Tourisme Montréal to Ivanhoé Cambridge and Claude Cormier, preserves the memory of the architect and symbolizes the luminous legacy left by this installation. The name « L’Anneau-Phare » perfectly captures the essence of the artwork—an eternal beacon that continues to illuminate Montreal and its history through time and space.
