La Maison Simons Galeries de la Capitale
GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 12th edition
The first Canadian retail store to generate a zero carbon footprint, the Galeries de la Capitale’s Maison Simons by LEMAYMICHAUD Architecture Design and Designstead is an exceptional example of ecoconstruction, consumption reduction and energy production.
To succeed in generating the annually consumerd energy, the traditional planning system was entirely reviewed. LED lighting is chosen and 27 geothermic wells reduce energy consumption by 60%. To generate enough energy to sustain its consumption, the store’s roof is covered with 2,300 double-faced solar panels while 1,020 additional panels align in the parking space, giving a striking green signature to the project. In undertaking these green initiatives, the store produces 1.3 M kWh a year, equalling the yearly energy consumption of 50 houses.
The jury rewarded the brilliant integration of solar panels, the elegantly deconstructed facade and the major scale of the green project.
