The House of Murmurations
The House of Murmurations is a multi-sensory installation where light, sound, and movement highlight and illuminate the architectural features of the site, sustaining the memories housed within its walls while signalling its change and transformation (PHI, 2022).
In keeping with the desire to symbolize the migratory avifauna of the Old Port of Montreal, which is intimately linked to the project site, the concept of the lighting design, which is resolutely contemporary and contrasts with the heritage character of the buildings, revolves around the flights of birds that can be seen freely inside the buildings and whose luminous traces appear through the saturated colours of the sunset. This ballet is intended to be a poetic representation of the energy and life that these buildings, full of history, have sheltered over the centuries, allowing passers-by to witness these past activities but also, by looking through these windows turned towards the future, to glimpse the new history that is about to be written.
In each of the 54 openings, in addition to a light projection inspired by shadow puppets from the roof of the Maison Pierre du Calvet annex, a skilful combination of light contours and mapping, emanating light through the flight of birds, has been used to highlight the richness of the four buildings as they stand in their final moments before they give life to the future PHI Contemporary.
The use of mainly LED lights allowed us to consume little energy and to carry out the project at low cost despite the size of the lighting, the number of buildings and the scale of the site. Moreover, the equipment used for this ephemeral installation will be reused in various future projects.
