the Miriam Foundation - Creative Art Center

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 16th edition

Discipline : Interior Design

Categories : Office / Office ≤ 5,400 sq.ft. (≤ 500 sq. m.) : Silver Certification

We are pleased to continue our collaboration with The Miriam Foundation in creating an art center for their recent creative and therapeutic arts program for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Thanks to numerous donations and a collaboration with the Bitton family, The Miriam Foundation and the design team were able to breathe new life into an abandoned former restaurant: a 4,000 square foot space on two floors.

Located in the building adjacent to The Miriam Foundation\\\\’s main center on 5703 Ferrier Street, Mount Royal, Quebec; the space underwent a major demolition, reusing the existing staircase that was brought up to code.

Creating a space supported by donations was a big challenge for the design team. Working with materials that were donated and researching products within a budget based the design on the value of simplicity: underlining the infamous phrase  \\\\ »Less is more.\\\\ » This minimalist approach was amplified by painted walls highlighting volumes, shapes and pattern.

Our mission was to create a welcoming pure and modern space to accommodate an art center that is separated into different functions , including on the first floor:

– An open area: a creative room for visual arts activities including painting, mixed media and photography

– A room with glass doors for the music and dance studio

– A relaxing lounge area for visitors and users

– An open kitchen to accommodate and facilitate access to teams and users

And at the 2nd floor , a mezzanine equipped with computer equipment for digital storytelling and theater.

Creating a space that can inspire individuals was an inspiration for the design team. By providing alternative means of communication, the space allows them to project and share their emotions and experiences on artistic mediums.
