La Fabrique 125
GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 7th édition
La Fabrique 125, located in the heart of the Chabanel district, is historically known to be where Montreal fashion all began. HUMÀ design + architecture found this heritage inspiring for the transformation of an industrial building into a residential community.
The enlarged hallways that expose the cement structure along with the completely unveiled columns preserve the industrial quality of the place. The carpet, specially designed for this space, mimics an asphalt pedestrian crossing, reminiscent of the district’s urban setting.
The historical attributes of the former textile factory are brought forth with graphic elements inspired by the crafts traditionally referred to as “ouvrage de dames”. The numbers of each condo unit form a long ribbon emulating a trail of embroidery stitches that continue onto the walls. In the lobby, an imposing black light fixture takes from the traditional cross-stitch that marks the start and finish of a sewing line.
The interior design of the building is successfully projected onto the outside. The star of the project is the monotone white briquetted cladding that was completely transformed by a lace of black and grey numbers, dressing it with an artistic signature. A true success, this innovative branding conveys a powerful cohesion and brings home the Signage and Location Branding Award of the year.
