GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Interior Design

Categories : Special Awards / Interior Design + Colour : Gold Certification

Categories : Accommodation, Restaurant & Bar / Restaurant ≤ 1,600 sq.ft. (≤ 500 sq. m.) : Gold Certification

Since its foundation, Lanterne architectes has distinguished itself by a tectonic practice that leaves ample room for the integration of color. The design of the main dining room at Julio restaurant, located in Quebec City’s Saint-Sauveur district, is a case in point.

A tribute to Mexican taquerias, Julio offers Mexican-inspired gluten-free cuisine and minimalist cocktails crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Tortillas are prepared on site every day.

The project proposes a reinterpretation of the traditional Mexican market, the tianguis, where metal structures assembled on site create distinct stalls, protected from the weather and sun by colorful canvases, which reflect and filter the light. The tianguis has its own system of self-contained streets and alleyways, like a city within a city.

At Le Julio, the dining room unfolds in a kaleidoscope of bright colors. Stalls in distinctive colors define the different areas of the dining room: seating, communal banquette and bar. Orange, red, yellow and blue: bold colors distinguish each section, offering different experiences to visitors. Colored plastic bands encircle the different market areas, offering customers a renewed visual experience when viewing the room through them.

The blue bar plays a central role for the spirit of the place, echoing Julio’s avant-garde cocktail offering. Its bluish sheet metal cladding echoes a materiality typical of tianguis. Seating is added on two peninsulas, to accommodate more customers.

Each colorful section of the restaurant implements a metal structure that integrates lighting, in the manner of street lamps on the street, designed entirely to order by the Lanterne architectes team and produced by Wusteken. This meticulously executed technical design illustrates the importance of collaborative work with the project’s manufacturers and craftsmen put forward by Lanterne architectes.
