SHH designed an extensive new dining facility for the end-users of Jiaming Investment Group head offices in Chaoyang district, Beijing. The client was focused on creating a space that promotes staff’s wellbeing and the space needed to be flexible, to accommodate corporate events and cookery classes for staff.
There are three distinct dining offers in the space and they’re used throughout various times of day. The servery dining hall operates from breakfast through to the evening. The hotpot restaurant and management-level private dining area are more lunch and evening dinner and events spaces. These operating hours and usages also influenced the choice of colours. Materials needed to be robust and easy to maintain, which is why terrazzo and tiles were used extensively.
The spaces are in the buildings’ basement and the lighting had to counter this absence of natural light by being bright in certain areas without creating glare. Throughout there is a mix of direct, indirect and concealed lighting. The lighting levels are also a direct response to the usage of each of the spaces making some areas brighter and some more moody.
