Great Hall – Brébeuf College

By : MSDL Architectes

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Interior Design : Grand Winner

Categories : Education, Institution & Healthcare / High School & College : Platinum Winner

Categories : Special Awards / Interior Design + Colour : Platinum Winner

The Great Hall of Brébeuf College is an emblematic and unifying space, an essential part of the college experience, both literally and figuratively. This space provides access to several key areas of student life, while also being a crossroads for exchanges, the scene of encounters that are often significant and decisive at this stage of life…

The project therefore had to reconcile the multiple objectives of modernizing the Collège’s image, making the circulation spaces clearer and more efficient, and ensuring the longevity of the new facilities. The design approach focused on the creation of a user-friendly environment, a choice of robust furniture and varied lighting, as well as the adaptability and flexibility of the spaces. In addition to providing a variety of meeting areas where students can eat, study, chat or work in teams, it is a structuring component that helps channel the flow of comers and goers, while allowing to bypass areas with tables and chairs.

This major redevelopment of the Great Hall is part of the school’s overall approach to its 100th anniversary. The institution’s identifying elements, including the coat of arms, the burgundy colour and the logo, were integrated into the architecture of the space to foster a sense of belonging to the institution.

The arch, which can be seen in both the logo and the institution’s coat of arms, as well as at the entrance to the main pavilion, was chosen in terms of materiality, colour, and shape to highlight the principal aisle, without detracting from the perception of the various gathering areas. For each of these, the layout and furnishings define a distinct atmosphere, graduating the activity from more dynamic spaces to quieter ones, which the students have quickly and easily made their own.

The project composes a coherent, interconnected whole, where students evolve, and student life expresses itself. In this renewed space, the decisive college experience finds the perfect place where friendships, dreams and hopes are anchored to be better deployed.
