GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Landscape & Territories

Categories : Landscape Architecture / Landscape Architecture - Commercial & Office Project : Silver Certification

Gemdale Lane stands as a charming fusion of retail and office spaces nestled within the captivating Former French Concession neighborhood of Shanghai. This locale, renowned for its enchanting tree-lined avenues, historic edifices, and romantic allure, sets the stage for a development inspired by its distinctive landscape and rich historical tapestry.

At street level, the commercial expanse gracefully unfurls along the building facade, harmonizing with neighboring establishments one by one. Within the constraints of space, every inch of the outdoor realm is thoughtfully utilized, orchestrating seamless transitions between passage and dining zones.

The integration of office lobbies into the street frontage fortifies spatial integrity through an open and symmetrical layout, augmented by luxurious metal textures and premium stone accents that underscore the inherent value of the environment.

Landscape architecture unfolds in grandeur with sweeping steps mirroring the building’s facade, forging a harmonious link between the built environment and the natural realm. Here, features a cascade of water alongside art installations and natural seating coalesce to fashion not just a picturesque locale worthy of Instagram admiration, but also an immersive outdoor sanctuary for rejuvenation and relaxation.

A tranquil corner garden beckons with its scattered flower beds, inviting benches, and intricate floral borders. Beyond its aesthetic contribution to the streetscape, this verdant oasis serves as a sanctuary for respite and communication.

Ascend to the second floor, where a central platform and corridor beckon. Designed as a multifunctional hub for al fresco dining, social gatherings, and cultural performances, this space boasts an elegant stainless-steel sculpture, “SURGE,” crafted by local artisans from the HAOSHUO studio, creating a visual nexus that seamlessly connects the building’s levels. The corridor, though modest in design, serves as a vital conduit for circulation and expansion of commercial space.

Soft landscaping takes center stage, with a plethora of flowering plant species carefully curated to evoke seasonal splendor. From the majestic “Hydrangea macrophylla” to the delicate “Tulbaghia violacea,” bursts of color breathe life into the surroundings, transforming the architectural canvas into a vibrant tapestry of natural beauty.

Material selection reflects a meticulous attention to detail, with granite hues like “goose feather gray” and “night snow” chosen to elevate the project’s overall aesthetic, particularly in the opulent office entrance lobby area. The subtle contrast between gray paving and beige facades further accentuates the architectural prowess on display.

In its entirety, the landscape of Gemdale Lane serves as a testament to seamless integration with nature, where meticulous attention to detail ensures a harmonious coexistence between the built environment and its natural surroundings. As a timeless endeavor, this project not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the community but also adds enduring value to its fabric.
