Living Growing Architecture
The project consists of growing a living architectural structure composed of willows. The installation, located in the heart of the village of Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, serves as a sculptural signal element, a shelter and a gathering place for the community. A local committee of volunteers was closely involved in the installation of the structure, and will continue to be involved in watering and pruning.
The construction technique is based on willow cuttings that are up to 20 feet high. By using a natural material that evolves with the seasons, the construction is both singular and familiar. The lighting ambiances, the smells, the movement of the leaves create a multi-sensory universe.
Inspired by iconic structures themselves inspired by plants, such as Nervi\’s Palais du Travail or Frank Loyd Wright\’s Johnson Wax, the project operates a sort of symbolic return to the origins.
