From our experience with a previous project, we already knew the building well; its constraints, its identity, its history.
EVAH Corp is a proudly Canadian biotechnology company focused on the development of technologies in the field of
animal health. Their mission is to find better ways to feed the world, to meet the needs of consumers who want antibiotic-free protein and to improve the sustainability of food by encouraging innovation.
Much of their research work is done in their laboratories in Saint-Hyacinthe. We wanted to capture part of this world through the design of their new office in Montreal. We identified the codes of the laboratory world and reworked them to marry them with a contemporary design, taking care to integrate the whole with the design of the existing building. The result is a contrast and a mix between the old and the new. A mix between the raw side of the century-old industrial building and the sleek and clean look of the laboratories. All with a vibrant retro touch.
The choice and application of color reinforces the uniqueness of the space and creates a contrast with the white tile of the countertops, while fitting in with the building’s palette of materials with its red brick, oxidized steel plates and the beige tones of its columns and ceiling.
Challenges
Being a project realized in the middle of the Covid period, it was necessary to adapt and to make with the availability of the moment. Normally we tend to favor local products and actors, but in this case it was an absolute necessity.
The competition between the comfort of working at home and the workplace.
Bringing teams back to the office is the leitmotiv of 2022.
Create a space that is no longer a workspace but a destination.
In this case, the idea was to create a space for partners and management members to have a place to meet and also to have a place to entertain in Montreal. It’s more like a meeting place. We need to be able to work and collaborate effectively, but it needs to be open to more occasional events or meetings.
