This project is basically an interior transformation of a 3-storey townhouse with basement in a future urban neighborhood of Montreal: Point-Saint-Charles. The architecture of the existing house is very modest, worker-type in red brick on 2 floors with a mezzanine set back on the 3rd floor. The front facade is directly on the street.
The client is a family with 4 children, who is moving from a rural environment to the edge of a lake in Abitibi. They wish to continue their life in an urban area of Montreal. The transformation of the targeted house is already underway by a promoter. The house and the neighborhood appeal to the client, but not the interior architecture planned by the developer. They integrated their own architect into their team to improve the interior spaces and make them more distinct and personalized.
The main architectural concepts introduced in the initial project are:
- Add a large breakthrough of natural light crossing all floors from the mezzanine level.
- Work on the ground floor plan in the form of a split-level to open up the space at the basement level.
- Work on the layout of the backyard to ensure a visual natural environment and natural light at basement level: Vertical garden in the form of landings.
- Integrate several built-in furniture made to measure to meet the needs of customers and qualify the interior spaces.
