GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition
Discipline : Interior Design
Categories : Residence / Senior-Living Private Residence : Silver Certification
Located on the site of the former Montreal Children’s Hospital, at the edge between Westmount and Ville-Marie, the SELENA residence is nestled within the 1111 Atwater Tower, also designed by NEUF. Eight of the tower’s 38 floors are dedicated to condominiums, and 21 to people aged 55 and over. Additionally, six floors are dedicated for residents with Alzheimer’s disease. These floors encompass 11,000 m² and offer 120 rooms for individuals with diminished autonomy and cognitive abilities.
The floors operate independently from each other and are organized into clusters to group residents with similar situations and challenges. Rooms incorporate care stations and a range of specialized equipment, such as height-adjustable furniture, counters and mirrors, threshold-free showers, patient lifts, benches, grab bars, and wheelchair accessible areas.
Common areas include dining rooms, a shared kitchen and lounges, an outdoor terrace on the fourth floor, and themed areas for group activities such as arts and crafts. The warm atmosphere of the entrance, the design of open-space areas, and the furniture choices were defined to create a sense of home, and to mitigate the institutional character. Rooms can be personalized by their resident with the display of memory boxes containing photos and keepsakes at their entrance.
The building envelope is highly energy-efficient, offering plenty of natural light and visual connections with the exterior. The introduction of numerous biophilic elements–plants, natural ventilation, winter garden, enhances the connection with nature for the well-being of the residents.
