GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition
Discipline : Architecture
Categories : Commercial Building / Mid & High-Rise Office Building (≥ 5 storeys) : Bronze Certification
Carrying an innovative vision of a place with a converted industrial past, Édifice du Canal transcends the simple functionality of an office building into one which fits perfectly into its environment with a mixed vocation. This project stands out for taking into account particular aspects of the location context such as the presence of canals, the historical richness of the site as well as the integration of a commercial vocation within a living environment characterized by the presence of two existing residential buildings.
Facade alignments were favored both on Saint-Patrick Street and on Canal Street, thus emphasizing the importance of harmony with the surrounding context. Each plot, with a view to successful integration, is made up of a red brick building inspired by local industrial architecture. A bridge volume with a contemporary design rests on these two buildings, crossing the trailrace. This difference in style gives the whole a harmonious coexistence, marking a synergy between the industrial heritage of the place and its thoughtful modernity.
Access to the canal, via a public pedestrian passage through the site, connects Saint-Patrick Street to the Lachine Canal linear park. This passage also serves as an interpretive route for the vestige discovered during the archaeological inventory of the site, through the installation of interpretation panels.
Thus, Édifice du Canal positions itself as a successful example of a balance between heritage preservation, architectural innovation and commitment to sustainability and community well-being.
