The design for the expansion of an existing high school in Chambly revolves around architectural materialization of a supportive and developmental ecosystem where students can learn, interact, socialize, and grow while fully experiencing the school’s social and natural environments.
Instead of attaching a new pavilion directly to the existing school, a long sunken natural space, dubbed the heart of the school, with a diversity of trees and plants has been introduced between the two buildings to bind the two entities into a coherent whole around a shared natural environment. Under the new building’s floating library volume, with its large, windowed façade, the boundary between the entrance plaza and the school’s lobby space is intentionally blurred. And if the new building’s front plaza and lobby space represent the continuity of the school with its surrounding community, the heart of the school represents the continuity of both the learning and natural environments.
Equipped with an open auditorium, sport facilities and a multi-purpose open space with tiered seating, the heart of the school allows for various actualizations of educational, cultural, and recreational combinations and interactions. The sunken natural space transforms the school into an educational ecosystem where the cultural, natural, and social aspects of education intermingle and enhance students’ learning experience while promoting healthier emotional and physical development.
