Basalte recently developed the branding for the young micro roasting company Dual, makers of superb coffee and curators of rich coffee experiences. Dual sells primarily online (shoppers may opt for 100% compostable bags) and in fine stores. Certain specialty food shops also carry their products in bulk.
Dual is the brainchild of two entrepreneurs who met through their daughters, who are friends. They formed a kinship over their love of coffee, and in 2021, founded their company. Basalte and Dual crossed paths in 2022 and instantly connected, sparking a blueprint for rethinking Dual’s branding and elevating the micro roaster to a level that more accurately reflected the quality of their work.
Basalte handled the logo, branding, photography, art direction for the transactional website, as well as the packaging for the 12 coffees that are part of their current lineup, sold in two assortments: essentials and revelations.
Jointly rooted in the Bauhaus style and the notion of duality, each of the logo’s four letters consists of two geometric shapes, and together they form a square. The negative space in the middle is a star, symbolizing the Dual brand.
The idea was to convey duality across all facets of the branding, the shapes, the colours, the photography, the coffee names. Even the labels, mini canvasses of contrasting colour schemes each uniquely inspired by the coffee names, have formal elements of the logo incorporated in their visual presentation.
