The [copy] KATS Participatory Design Workshop Toolkit represents our response to ethical challenges within art and design education, specifically addressing issues surrounding visual plagiarism. Over a two-year research project dedicated to understanding the unique challenges faced by design educators, we aimed to disrupt the status quo and bring about positive change in design education. Crafting the brand strategy with art and design educators in mind, our goal was to make discussions on visual plagiarism both informative and enjoyable. After engaging with multiple stakeholders, we identified four significant challenges (differing levels of Knowledge, incorrect Assumptions, Time constraints, and lack of Support), strategically using the term “KATS” to encapsulate them. This acronym became our secret cat-nip, establishing a playful connection with the brand.
The [copy] KATS Toolkit is more than a practical resource; it’s a commitment to fostering creative integrity in art and design education and serves as an open invitation for educators to immerse themselves in a learning experience. With the brand slogan “Don’t Cut Corners,” we embody the essence of creative integrity through ethical, creative practice, a philosophy woven into the visual narrative of the brand. Our mission is to revolutionise the discourse on visual plagiarism, turning challenges into opportunities for growth. The vision extends beyond boundaries—we see a future where art and design education is rooted in the values of collaboration, inclusivity, and creativity. Featuring four hands-on activities and a user-friendly maker pack, the kit empowers educators to create solutions collaboratively, building a design community. Initiated due to educators grappling with issues of visual plagiarism, the toolkit introduces a dynamic dialogue about originality, avoiding what can be a dry and complex topic. The adorable cats play a lead creative role in inviting discussions, and by introducing these playful elements, we aim to create a friendly atmosphere that encourages exploratory actions, making the learning experience both enjoyable and impactful. In this case, curiosity does not kill the cat!
