More than a conversion, this project marks the rehabilitation of an iconic building. All challenges along the way were met with style.
Light pemeates a building destined, in keeping with its primary vocation, to be dark. A dynamic luminosity that in no way diminishes the stature of the place in Montreal’s history.
The circular theme imposed by the building is leveraged to its full potential through an inspired use of symmetry, coherent volumes, and exacting precision in the use of materials, with a result that is resolutely elegant and refreshingly modern.
A clever and original eye for detail can be seen throughout, and deft touches of red serve as a motif to recall the ÉTS’ visual identity.
The concept is welcoming, and several distinctive features of the interior design do much to persuade the visitor to linger in this place that is emblematic of northernness—an essential aspect of Quebec design. It is a successful transformation that provides students a setting conducive to innovation and that enables them to look toward the future.
The planetarium is a Quebec institution, and the team of seasoned architects looked to the perpetual motion within the universe for inspiration, expressed through curves and a mastery of space, to restore the grandeur and beauty of a building that, thanks to its timeless and immutable design, will live on like a cosmic dance.
