Conestoga College School of Health and Life Sciences Renovations

By : Gow Hastings Architects

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Architecture

Categories : Public Building / Higher Education & Research Building : Silver Certification

The 1,500 square meters renovation of existing classroom space in the East Wing of Conestoga College’s Doon Campus creates specialized laboratories and support spaces for the Health Sciences Bachelor of Applied Biotechnology and Medical Laboratory Science Advanced Diploma Programs.

The design transforms formerly enclosed classrooms into bright, light-filled research spaces. Carefully sequenced glazing creates visibility into the laboratories and out to the exterior tree canopies connecting the labs to nature. These open and transparent connections reveal research areas previously conducted “behind closed doors.”

Bold graphics are a key design feature, facilitating wayfinding and creating a sense of identity in a highly controlled, sterile environment. Vibrant greens are featured in a large bold floor graphic, spelling out “Biotechnology” and “Medical Science”. These letters intuitively draw users from the corridor into the lab through passive wayfinding.  Additionally, bold-coloured doors are strategically integrated to welcome visitors into the space and assist in navigating the space effectively.

Canadian Biosafety Standard Level 2 Certified Labs are designed for the development of physical containment areas with consideration for the handling and manipulation of human pathogens and toxins.  The labs are carefully coordinated, providing a simple, clean, and safe space for research. Millwork and equipment are aligned to amplify sightlines and create an orderly work environment. A chemical storage room and offices for faculty and staff support the program.

By being very efficient with the floor plan, the architects were able to create space for a visually striking student hub and gathering space, in addition to the labs. The student hub is well-lit with a custom illuminated solid-surface Corian column sign indicating the E-Wing. An abstract graphic of enlarged cell playfully connects back to the research conducted.

The successful completion of this renovation project significantly contributes to the advancement of Conestoga College’s Doon Campus. The updated facilities provide cutting-edge spaces and curated labs specifically designed for the needs of the Advanced Health and Life Science Programs. This renovation project further supports students in these programs and promotes excellence in education and research at Conestoga College.
