Collège Boisbriand is a private high school that promotes and encourages daily physical activity to support academic success. The main objective of its expansion plan was to provide more room in order to enhance the educational, athletic and extracurricular offerings, while introducing contemporary layouts that better reflect its pedagogical approach focused on movement.
This goal guided the concept for the addition from the outset, a concept centred on the student experience and thus revolving around learning spaces and sports facilities. The concept also fosters an ongoing dialogue between students and the outdoors. Slightly staggered from the original building, the addition is in line with the current football field and is nearer to it. The entire school, indoors and out, is now connected in a continuous flow in terms of both traffic and sightlines. The meeting point of the old and the new structures was designed to be the heart of the school, infusing it with a dynamic and invigorating energy. Movement is the watchword throughout.
The bright new glass mezzanine overlooks the new hall and cafeteria, which includes bleachers, as well as the areas leading to lockers and the indoor and outdoor athletic facilities. The mezzanine offers a wide field of vision from the entrance to the second floor, providing an immersive and stimulating experience. The school colours—orange and blue—were used to accentuate the sense of vitality and reinforce a feeling of belonging.
The addition showcases spaces that support and encourage physical activity on a daily basis, while creating innovative teaching areas that foster academic achievement. The bleachers on the upper levels make the space versatile and multi-purpose. The terrace classrooms bring the outside in —providing a breath of fresh air for the mind and the body. These thoughtful solutions take into account new pedagogical approaches involving active learning.
The result is that Collège Boisbriand, which already enjoys a sterling reputation for its athletic program, now has a campus that also reflects its academic mission. The school can consolidate its on-site activities by making accessible high-quality facilities that are large enough for its student body and its many sports teams.
