Design of Funs × Chon Buri | Natural Balance, Unceasing Symbiosis
Architectural Relationship
« The best architecture is like this. We are deeply in it, but we don’t know where nature ends and art begins. »
Our project is nestled in the heart of GaoZhuang, cradle of the Dai ethnic culture in Xishuangbanna. This land has nurtured a wealth of cultural traditions and the wonders of nature. The two structures are separated by a central promenade, with distinct shops occupying each side. On the left, a spa center, while on the right, a restaurant. This corridor not only connects the two sides, but also offers privacy to each individual space.
Chon Buri en Plein Air
Air lends freshness, vegetation breathes life, and stones confer primordial strength. Seemingly simple, little do we know that all this is nature’s most magnificent adornment, as well as the bond that unites us to her.
The main inspiration for the restaurant’s design comes from the common leaves of the local rainforest. Yet it is these modest leaves that, like a perpetual springtime, flow ceaselessly, sustaining the balance and harmony of the entire forest with every breath.
The concept of « then and now » is one of the most important elements of the restaurant’s design.
The concept of « drawing inspiration from nature », drawing inspiration from the inherent forms found in the natural world, and learning from nature to incorporate it into architectural design. We use materials that appear similar, making only minimal design improvements, reducing the artificial decorative feel. This approach allows the building to have a more natural, harmonious feel.
In the case of the « B » building, we use the same materials as in the « C » building.
In the extended space beyond the staircase, we chose to employ the traditional bamboo weaving technique of the Dai people of Xishuangbanna, creating a deep connection with nature in this environment, as seamlessly merging the realms of inside and outside. Here, you will experience not only a unique panoramic view, but also the regenerative power of nature. In creating experiential spaces for humanity, we have made a conscious effort not to displace or disrupt the lives of the « natives ». We have artistically preserved bird habitats, and every intricate design element has been meticulously crafted to pay the greatest homage to nature and harmoniously integrate the building into the fabric of the rainforest.
.
In the courtyard: Surrounded by trees or red bricks, the courtyard blurs the boundaries between inside and outside. This captivating courtyard offers a true connection with nature, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the serenity and beauty it’offers.
Chon Buri Interior
Inside the restaurant, small wooden bridges and green shale stones are artistically arranged, enveloped by lush vegetation. This arrangement evokes a sense of anticipation and intrigue for guests.
We selected an abundance of wood and bamboo furnishings, collectively creating an immersive ambience that transports guests into the heart of a thriving rainforest. This promises a distinctive and indelible dining experience for our guests.
What we are exploring is the wonderful experience of harmonizing space, body and nature in perfect resonance. The Serene Beauty of Minimalism: The spa draws its inspiration from minimalism, simplifying space to its ultimate essence, creating a profound sense of tranquility. Here, the complexities of the world are replaced by silence, allowing you to find serenity in a pure environment.
