Centre de pathologie moléculaire Dubrovsky

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 8th edition

The Dubrovsky Molecular Pathology Centre is one of the largest molecular pathology labs in Montreal specializing in the study of cancer and one of the main clinical and research hubs of its kind in Canada.

When it came to creating a cutting-edge design for this centre, which contains labs for biomarker research, development of PCR techniques and molecular diagnostics, as well as ancillary rooms to house freezer and cryogenics facilities and robotic equipment, the architects certainly had their work cut out. It was a Rubik’s cube of a challenge!

NFOE Architects & Associates tackled this complex challenge head on, using a colour play—bright red to emphasize angles, apple-green walls in corridors—to evoke the different paths to discovery and health. White and black were also used, to define and separate work zones. Smooth, modern, yet warm high-sheen surfaces provide a high-quality professional feel. All the lab equipment gleams as if on display in a jeweller’s window.

“We know that a laboratory is a workplace, and as such, the bold, contemporary design of the MPC will encourage research by providing pleasant and stimulating surroundings in which to work. What’s more, the precise and pertinent use of colour and the clever division of space will help attract the interest of researchers elsewhere.”
