GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition
Discipline : Interior Design
Categories : Residence / Residential Space > 5,400 sq.ft. (> 500 sq.m.) : Gold Certification
This 600 square meter apartment was designed and remodeled in four and a half months, since it had to be inhabitable at the end of that period. Keeping this in mind, it was necessary to develop a design with a manufacturing and construction process that would allow it to be finished and ready on the date specified. Lean methodology was used, which was key for finishing it on time and for using fewer resources.
The apartment’s concept is ample, elegant, and formal spaces where the furnishings are a continuation of the space and not an interruption. The atmosphere is established with dark colors, such as tones of brown and gold accents, to provide the space with warmth and a sense of calm.
There is a 180º panoramic view of the Loma Larga Mountain range and of the Cerro de La Silla Mountain in Monterrey, which has the added advantage of large amounts of natural light. The apartment has four bedrooms located on the eastern side of the building, including a master bedroom and three smaller bedrooms, each with their own bathrooms.
Upon designing the apartment, one of the limitations was the height of the ceilings, since the original design had exposed girders and ducts, which limited the height of the spaces. This was solved by taking advantage of the highest areas and the large windows, thus playing with the different heights of light-colored ceilings and recessed lighting. Some of the lighting is done with pendant lights such as the Flos lighting fixture in the dining room.
The social area of the apartment is in an open space with no dividing walls, with a living room, dining room and open kitchen with an integrated table and bar. This space has a wall that is 16 meters long which was originally designed to have a chimney. This wall was converted into a transition element to give character, design, and strength to the entire apartment. lt was covered with contrasting materials such as different sized pieces of granite treated with an acid-wash technique, bringing out grey tones. There is a combination of textures and volumes that convert this longitudinal wall into an elegant space. The bar has a black granite top and its vertical end surfaces are enveloped in ebony.
The client requested leather furniture that elegantly combines with the materials and colors used in the interior design. The apartment has artwork that is a part of the owners’ private collection. Lucy in the Art lithographs found in the bedrooms were imported from Europe. The master bedroom has a custom-made walnut pop-up TV lift cabinet that is perfect for allowing for a full vista of the Cerro de la Silla Mountain from the bedroom windows, without the TV blocking the view. In another bedroom found opposite the master bedroom the unit for the TV is located on a column in the corner of the apartment in a special custom made built-in cabinet.
This project combines elegance in materials with a strong relationship with the natural context, transforming the views of Monterrey into the project’s most significant detail. Similarly, the furniture designed by the firm adds functional and aesthetic value to the areas, making use of every space and optimizing the design, enabling a personalized and exclusive experience for the user.
