GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Interior Design

Categories : Residence / Residential Space 1,600 - 5,400 sq.ft. (150 - 500 sq.m.) : Gold Certification

Casa Iliada is a single-family residential project by Nogalya, located in the southwest of Mexico City, nestled in the wooded area of the city, offers us a rich, dynamic, and welcoming architectural experience.

The living room is the backbone of the project. Thanks to its spatial location, it articulates the spaces of the house. Situated in a double-height setting, it gains vitality thanks to the herringbone design of the floor, which, through a diagonal arrangement, interweaves pieces of wood and granite, subtly guiding towards the various spaces of the residence. In this space, geometric candelabras of black wire introduce an industrial contrast in coherence with the concrete walls, providing contemporary elegance.

The double height, emphasized by the floor-to-ceiling bookcase, not only serves as a decorative element but also as an ingenious divider that directs circulation towards the more intimate areas. This bookcase offers a visual perspective of the circulation, creating a sense of openness and connectivity across the different levels, thanks to the rhythm generated by the randomly arranged wainscoting, allowing light to enter between the social space and the stair circulation.

Highlighting visual cohesion, a wooden ceiling panel unites the floors and ceilings, contributing to the creation of a cozy atmosphere and seamlessly connecting the different elements of the space. In addition, the introduction of distinctive elements, such as the elegant black Monterrey marble composition with white veins and a gold finish, adds a unique touch to the overall design.

The strategically located dining room becomes a focal point, characterized by a contrast between the robustness of the reinforced concrete and the perfection of the white plaster ceilings. Crowning this space is a mixed-technique mural painted on a mirror, adding dimension, color, and daring to the ensemble.

The stairs, clad in black Monterrey marble, add a touch of luxury and enrich the space’s journey. The living room connects with a terrace, establishing a harmonious link between the interior and the surrounding nature, which contextualizes us and makes us feel as if we are inside the forest. In addition, the wooden flooring harmoniously merges with granite cladding in the kitchen, achieving an aesthetic and functional transition.

In the intimate areas, such as the main bedroom, an aesthetic play seeks to balance the elegant and modern, countering the inherent coldness of the concrete walls. Strategically placed, bedroom linens and black and white linen rugs, following the interior’s color palette, add a touch of luxury and refinement to the room. The presence of a Barcelona chair on a faux cowhide adds a playful element to the room, while maintaining the elegance that characterizes the space. Moreover, a beveled mirror bedside table with black fittings complements the aesthetics, merging functionality and style in this intimate setting.

In terms of design and textures, a harmonious balance is achieved between the solid poured concrete walls and the furniture carefully designed by the group, which incorporates the warmth of walnut wood and sophisticated touches of Carrara marble. The project stands out for its ability to perfectly blend bulky elements and robust materials, like reinforced concrete and steel, which seamlessly intermingle with walnut woods, marbles in black, white, and grey tones, as well as bold art pieces and decorative elements, contributing to the richness and uniqueness of the space.
