Cardigan Knit Lounge

By : Studio Urquiola Haworth

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 16th edition

Discipline : Product : Grand Winner, Award of the Year Winner

Categories : Product Design in Small Series & Hand-Made / Residential, Commercial & Built-In Furniture : Platinum Winner

The Cardigan Knit Lounge is a chair with striking aesthetics that meets unparalleled comfort. It is simple and efficient – conveying lightness at first sight. Cardigan has a malleable back that supports different postures and the cozy digital knit upholstery warms up a space. It is a chair that can be very relaxed, with a cocoon-like attitude for casual interactions, or comfortable and supportive for focus work within the home or corporate offices.

As work environments become more flexible and collaborative, the need for lounge seating is increasing. Cardigan was designed to support these spaces and different postures. This versatile digital knit lounge chair is easily installed and “ribs” on the back add a perceived visual support. Overall, the knit features a very soft and warm feel.

Cardigan lounge is designed with the user in mind starting from the assembly phase. It can be shipped to consumers directly as a knock down product, allowing for faster and lower cost delivery. Haworth explored delivery-friendly alternatives to traditional bulky upholstered products – the result is a product weighing less than 50lbs and a frame that can ship partially assembled. Cardigan fits into courier-friendly packaging, allowing much more flexibility. This approach also emphasizes easy disassembly at end-of-life so each part can be re-introduced in a circular design system.

Patricia Urquiola’s design concept was informed by the digital knitting process that Haworth continues to research and experiment with for furniture products. It’s also important for sustainability. Made from 100% recycled PET, the chair avoids the use of any glue. Because all knits are engineered to the exact dimensions, producing perfectly-sized components, leftovers are reduced to a minimum. This is a unique advantage for seating products and supports zero waste sustainability efforts.

Cardigan’s legs and framework are made of metal and the knit is made from 100% recycled PET, including the cushion cover. The chair used simple mechanical assembly systems instead of glue.
