Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG) new Canadian headquarters reflects the the vision and culture of their brand while creating lasting impact. The space allows employees and visitors to embrace health and wellness, productivity, and innovation within a workplace for their teams to thrive.
Project Objectives and Challenges
BCG is a fast-paced environment where staff work in teams and together with clients to expand the art of the possible, to build a sustainable competitive advantage, transform their businesses and achieve positive societal change. Reimagining the office ecosystem during the pandemic required a thoughtful approach to space, operations and technology. All would have to work in harmony to ensure the staff could perform their tasks seamlessly. BCG wanted to create a space that would act as a magnet to draw people back into the office. They encouraged the design team to dream big and create “awe” moments throughout the whole space, not just client facing areas. The goal was to create an inclusive, bespoke high performing workplace that fosters BCG’s best work.
The team designed around four central themes to provide BCG with a destination office space: culture and brand, collision and connection, next generation ways of working, and health and wellbeing. The core design principles formed a pathway to guide all decisions throughout the project. These principles informed the design of the case teams which they utilize to bring thoughtful solutions to their clients. Reimagining their interior build, one typology of case rooms was created to support neurodiversity, accessibility, and generate creative solutions to client problems.
BCG and its people required their new space to allow people to come together to innovate, increase productivity and improve culture, and propel BCG Canada and its business leaders forward.
The Solution
BCG wanted a space to drive collisions and connections, and our team designed a memorable work environment that helps rebuild social capital with an iconic three-story atrium which fosters belonging. The daylight-filled atrium connects reception and café spaces and is the heart of the organization.
BCG wanted to highlight their mission through thoughtful experiential installations that emphasize the organization’s DNA and brand to unite employees and clients alike. To achieve this, our team designed a feature timeline wall constructed of wood veneer, with physical and digital signage that showcase years of BCG collateral turned into a dynamic display to celebrate their past and future. The brand elements immerse employees and visitors in BCG’s rich Canadian history. Digital and physical installations were integrated to instill pride of place and connect staff to the past and future possibilities.
Elements of hospitality design create moments of delight that nurture a sense of ease as people experience the space. The curated art, objects, and greenery within the space come from diverse Canadian artists and vendors. Rich materials and furniture were chosen to provide the comforts of home with ergonomics in mind. Layered wood tones, hand troweled plaster, textured brick veneer, and leather wrapped pulls offer moments of tactile connection to authentic materials. The furniture and lighting evolve throughout to correspond with the unique experiences across the three floors.
