Perron Design signs a special chalet-hotel on the mountainside, at the top of the ski slopes in Charlevoix, for a large nature-loving family.
For this project, the Perron team’s mandate was to design a family chalet capable of accommodating numerous guests, family and friends, in order to make it not only a meeting place, but also a place of rejuvenation where everyone feels at ease. The idea of imagining a real mansion with five suites was obvious from the outset, both for the team and for the client, who was very enthusiastic about the idea.
.
Blurring the boundary between residential and commercial, Perron drew on its expertise and ties to European manufacturers to design a bespoke, out-of-the-ordinary project, exploiting the hotel theme for a family residence in dire need of space.
Turnkey hotel
« The customer wanted a true turnkey, which is pretty rare, » points out Sarah Ève Hébert, associate designer at Perron. « He gave us free rein and we decided to play the hotel card down to the smallest detail, right down to placing dishes in the cupboards, the luggage cart in the hallway, shower products labeled Bertha and toothbrushes in the bathrooms, » she smiles. « We’ve also designed bespoke furniture directly imported from Europe, thanks to our privileged links with several major manufacturers. »
The design team has thought of everything to make the family chalet a place of relaxation and vacation worthy of the biggest hotel chains: modern suites with every comfort, terrace with spa, fireplace and panoramic view of the river, children’s playroom with climbing wall, gym, garage with ski lockers, professional kitchen, etc.
Bringing elegance to the hotel concept, Bertha’s own branding has even been created to offer a refined and fun experience for guests. Suites have their own names, and bathroom products are adorned with pretty Bertha-signed labels.
The Sno, Nev, Ho, Lumi and Sne suites, whose names are inspired by the word ‘snow’ in different languages, are furnished similarly, but in different color palettes. They all feature a full bathroom for guests’hotel-style comfort.
Positive Nordic energy
The interior design, which Perron wanted to be Nordic-inspired to pay homage to the mountains, is for its part minimalist, warm and highly functional. It reveals exposed fir wood framing, bleached to order. The large volumes, added to the basic plans to enlarge the space in compliance with the project rules, are bathed in natural light thanks to abundant fenestration, creating a constant link with the outdoors, the river and the surrounding nature. Natural materials such as wood, indoor plants, and felted wool were favored, as were soft hues and clean lines, to emphasize the Nordic inspiration.
« We punctuated the very neutral, minimalist ensemble with textured, colorful elements that are unusual in Quebec, » says Sarah Ève Hébert. We wanted to give pride of place to Nordicity, pleasure and eclecticism. »
A yellow piano takes pride of place in the living room, a custom-built red slide provides access to the children’s playroom, and a colorful, more intimate dining area in the communal dining room: the design team combined materials, colors and novel concepts to instill the positive energy the customer wanted to see radiating throughout his chalet.
From the mountains to the living room
On the first floor, a room with a suspended fireplace takes center stage, inviting you to relax after a long day on the slopes. No need to remove wet boots thanks to the brick flooring. A boot warmer hides in the adjacent walk-in closet.
The garden level is a large space reserved for children’s enjoyment: climbing wall, dormitory, swing, retractable walls, slide and furniture designed for their height. Everything has been thought out so that the little ones can have fun in complete safety in a playful and ultra-colorful environment.
The common areas are located upstairs. The grandiose 500 ft2 lounge, directly inspired by the lobbies of the finest hotels, features spaces for reading, meeting and contemplation. The kitchen, with all professional equipment subtly concealed behind large panels, allows the family to invite a chef to the chalet to satisfy the taste buds of the many guests. A bar and wine cellar complete the gustatory offering. Unique pieces of furniture imported from Europe, from high-end manufacturers such as Sancal, Dooor, Moooi and Bonaldo, are accompanied by hand-woven cushions and rugs by local artisans from L’Isle-aux-Coudres.
« Bertha is a chalet-hotel that infuses a vacation spirit with Nordic inspirations, whose design honors European prestige and Quebecois charm, » concludes Sarah Ève Hébert.
