GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 17th edition

Discipline : Architecture : Grand Winner

Categories : Special Award / Architecture + Landscape : Gold Certification

Categories : Residential Building / Cottage & Country House : Gold Certification

Categories : Commercial Building / Hotel & Resort : Gold Certification

Aurora is set in a beautiful location in the Lyngen alps. The project is a high-end chalet for exclusive stays in the arctic north. The program demanded a particular focus not only on spending quality time together, but also on privacy and the possibility to have time for yourself, to relax, contemplate the experience of nature or as an inspiring place to live and work.

The design of the complex and buildings seeks to ensure both privacy and exposure to the nature outside.

The layout of the complex ensures a healthy and old-fashioned exposure to nature outside, regardless of weather and season, to come together and appreciate the shared moments.

The main building is organized around a central entrance with covered outdoor fireplace and branches off to kitchen, dining room and lounge on the north side, library and lounge around an open fireplace on the south side of the building. Hidden entrance through the library leads to a comfortable bathroom and wardrobe on the south side.

Three bedrooms are done as stand-alone suites. The interior is a complete custom furniture, including a complete fold-out workstation. The slanting dark surfaces of the bathrooms create a private sanctuary.

All of the volumes close up completely when nobody´s home.

The spread-out complex ensures both complete privacy and optimizes the experience of both nature and natural phenomena outside, but it also served to preserve the trees and natural vegetation on site.

All buildings are raised well above the terrain, which provide the natural terrain underneath with sufficient daylight, water etc to live more or less undisturbed from the buildings above. It also creates the experience of ascending to elevated private viewing positions in the landscape.

A service building is built into the terrain, only accessible and visible through its withdrawn glass doors. The building houses not only technical spaces and storage, but also a flexible space for mixed use and a changing room with connecting bathrooms for the activities on offer in the near surroundings: Freeride skiing, kayaking, snowmobiling, fishing, trekking etc.
