The Montreal plex is a prominent figure in the architectural heritage that makes up the urban landscape of the city’s residential neighborhoods that we know today. Located in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville neighborhood, the Aterlier DuPlex is the creation of a hybrid space of an artist residence and an art gallery. Inspired by the history and integrity of typical plexes in Montreal, the main intention was to create a journey from the « Mid-century » style, when the building was originally built, to an atmosphere that can transform and adapt throughout the years with its residents and its constantly evolving environment.
The journey is based on the principle of the artist’s creative process. The stages of the process can easily be identified in each floor. In this way, the creative process is experienced personally and physically within the space. The DuPlex Studio also offers great flexibility and versatility, allowing residents to adapt the space to their needs; the DuPlex Studio can be transformed into the DuPlex Gallery when it is time to showcase the art created in the studio. Several removable elements offer endless design possibilities so residents can push their creativity beyond their artistic creations.
