The ASARI (Institute for Research on Sustainable Agriculture in Africa) is a research center on siltation of the Sahara desert area and sustainable farming techniques, commissioned by Morocco’s King Mohammed VI for Phosboucraa Foundation & Ocp. The architectural design – by Bechu + Associés, Paris, France – is designed to create minimal impact on the environment in which it is inserted, with colors and shapes found in the area, and with the addition of protective walls against the strong wind from the sea that crosses a large portion of the desert before reaching the plant. The addition of the multidiamond canopy creates light-shadow effects similar to those found in natural oases, as well as protecting the outdoor spaces between the workshops from strong sun.
All photos were taken in Laayoune, Morocco, in daylight.
