GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 7th édition
Thirty white beds, carefully arranged, stand out against the gray gravel of an abandoned lot. Some are reduced to their most basic form: a white rectangle; others are adorned with embellishments. The overall impression is quasi abstract – but not quite: the object’s evocative power gives life to a peculiar scenery.
The bed, a private sanctuary, is exposed for all to see. Its individuality is multiplied; a resting place, it lays empty and naked. Each of these mismatched frames collected here and there is unique, like its virtual occupant whose presence is all the stronger. In fact, the empty space is slated to become a university residence of 30 rooms that will house McGill University students.
The work of art in situ that seems to appear out of nowhere is intriguing; a desire to approach, to touch, is spurred on by the familiar objects of old fashioned style, almost nostalgic. Laureate of the Exhibition Award, the ephemeral art installation by KANVA offers the passer by a precious, yet unexpected moment to unwind between two ordinary buildings of Montreal’s city center. Individuality within the collective union, intimate versus public boundaries, generations being born, living and vanishing, are ideas brought forth in the simplest manner.
