Le 205

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 8th edition

Le 205: A project of winning proportions

Two awards, no less, for Atelier Moderno’s “Le 205” project: Kitchen and Bathroom. It was the project as a whole that appealed to the jury, who applauded the intelligent use of volumes and proportions in this minimalist design, created in the shell of a 1950s building that was once a workshop.

The kitchen is defined by three strong and distinct work zones. First, a mass of dark colour at the back, with a black wall and stainless steel countertop and cooking area; then a brilliantly contrasting white Corian™ island, lit by a skylight; and finally, a table made from white oak to match the storage cabinets. On the ceiling, whose beams and ductwork were left exposed, an Alvar Aalto lamp complements original structural features such as the cross bridging.

Adjoining the master bedroom is a private bathroom with surprising features such as an open-flame countertop brazier to warm up those wintery mornings. Separating this space from the bedroom, a black glass partition contrasts with the white, creating perspective like in a work of art. The large windows let in an abundance of light, which reflects off the materials—porcelain, painted concrete, Ipe wood, stainless steel and glass—in different ways. The toilet, shower and bath areas are divided in such a way as to respect individual privacy.

Both kitchen and bathroom are appealingly unique spaces, light, airy and welcoming, with uncluttered simplicity.
