In Your Wildest Dreams, Ensor Beyond Impressionism was a temporary exhibition at KMSKA, created in collaboration with experience designers Tinker imagineers. It offered an immersive exploration of James Ensor’s artistic world, combining theatrical scenography with interactive analogue and digital installations.
Spread across 13 themed rooms, the exhibition traced Ensor’s creative evolution through contrasting spaces inspired by his work – light and darkness, satire and sincerity, realism and fantasy. Visitors entered through an archway in the shape of Ensor’s head and encountered a series of interactive installations, including touchscreen easels to explore hidden details in his paintings and a Pepper’s Ghost illusion bringing the artist to life in his studio.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the exhibition reused existing museum hardware and incorporated adaptable elements. It also sought to make Ensor’s work accessible to a wide audience, engaging visitors through a multi-layered storytelling approach.
With over 282,000 visitors in under six months, In Your Wildest Dreams became one of the museum’s most successful exhibitions, drawing both public and critical acclaim. It offered a fresh perspective on Ensor’s legacy, making his world tangible and engaging for contemporary audiences.
