Steffen LEHMANN
Professor Steffen Lehmann, Ph.D.
Assoc. AIA, Dr.-Ing. (TU Berlin), AA Dipl (London) is an internationally recognized designer, strategic leader, entrepreneur, engineer, senior academic, author, and urbanist. In 1993, he registered as a licensed architect and urban designer in Berlin. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, AIA and the RIBA.
He is a tenured full professor.

In 2020 he co-founded si_architecture + urban design, a globally active integrated design studio, based in Dubai and Barcelona.
In 1993 he established his own award-winning practice in Berlin, STEFFEN LEHMANN ARCHITEKTEN & STADTPLANER GmbH (s_Lab), to pursue a more ethical practice, contributing significant projects to the ‘New Berlin’ (he delivered over Euro 1.5 bill. construction budget).
Prior to this, he worked with architects Jim Stirling (in London) and Arata Isozaki (in Tokyo).
Over the last 30 years, Steffen has held a range of senior leadership positions at 4 research-intensive universities; lived and worked in Berlin, London, Tokyo, the USA (Berkeley, Las Vegas), and Australia, experiencing a range of practice methods and approaches.
He is the former Director of 3 schools of architecture, and works globally at the forefront of research-informed practice and teaching in sustainable urban architecture, exploring our complex relationship with nature, technology and place.
He held the inaugural UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Urban Development for Asia-Pacific; today, he continues to work with UNESCO and UN ESCAP ex-officio, as adviser on important initiatives.
Steffen has won important design competitions and published 23 books with prestigious publishers; and over 500+ research publications, with over 5,000 registered citations in Google Scholar.
Visiting Professorships:
DAAD Professor at TU Munich; Visiting Professorships: Keio University Tokyo, National University Singapore, TU Berlin, University of California Berkeley, Tianjin University, and Distinguished Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong, China.
He regularly provides high-level independent advice to governments, municipalities, industry on design matters, as an adviser to over a dozen cities: Berlin, Helsinki, Shanghai, Singapore, Ho-Chi-Minh City, Abu Dhabi, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Reno, and Honlulu.
