Sophie Burke Design (SBD), founded in 2004, is an award-winning Vancouver-based design practice known for our creativity, subtle sophistication, and attention to detail. The focus of our work is private homes and select retail and commercial. Founded with a desire to engage one-on-one with a like-minded clientele, the studio has grown into a tight-knit studio family of nine. Our philosophy is to design unique, timeless, and beautiful spaces that are meaningful for the people who live in them. At the heart of our work, we are driven by the simple belief that thoughtful design contributes to wellbeing, and we work hard to bring this ethos to life for our clients. The homes we design are meant to be lived in and we strive to create spaces that provide true functionality and liveability, working together with clients to define what that means specifically to them. We value the relationships that we build with clients over the design and appreciate the trust that they have in us, always working with a team mentality to deliver projects that exceed expectations.

A Vancouver-native, Sophie finished her undergraduate degree in BC before moving to London to study interior design. After graduation she began working at Conran and Partners under the leadership of the legendary Terence Conran. Working on projects in London, Paris and Tokyo cemented her love for classic, contemporary elegance and provided the backdrop for her refined design sensibility.

Upon her return to Vancouver, she launched Sophie Burke Design, which blends the aesthetic she honed while abroad with the singular beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Since then, SBD has created a bespoke portfolio of work that seeks to define a new Pacific Northwest design ethos: interiors that take cues from nature — such as deep colours, rugged textures and natural materials — but dovetail with a global perspective. Sophie believes that design should always be functional and liveable, with an inherent warmth and sense of ease.

Our work is consistently featured in national, international, and local media. Canadian House and Home Magazine said of Sophie: “[Her] sophisticated, eclectic sensibility is spot-on’ and she has been labelled “Vancouver’s Design Darling” by the same magazine.

In 2024, we continued to expand the team and the scope of projects, seeing major growth in our return customer and referral clients coming back to us for large scale projects. This has been exceptionally gratifying as it underscores to us the value of the work we do. Our clients come back to us because we foster strong relationships, both with them as well as the whole team involved in the building of a home. We have continued to nurture our close relationships with our ecosystem of tradespeople, suppliers, and consultants as we truly believe that the success of a project lies in collective strength of all the people behind it. As ever, we want to make a difference in our clients’ lives, and having them come back for second, third or fourth projects with us means we are doing our job well.
