Bcompact’s passion for compact living was born out of necessity. Whilst living in New York City for several years; in high-priced & cramped conditions. Bcompact founder, Zev Bianchi, realized that there was a real need to give people a choice to create the best possible living environment in the least amount of space.

The hybrid stairs and ladders are now to be manufactured in Quebec!

The Bcompact retractable hybrid ladder-staircase provides an ingenious and simple solution to a space management problem. Created in Sydney, Australia and soon to be manufactured in Quebec, the intelligent space-saver folds against the wall to optimize living space… and wins the Award of the Year in Product and Industrial Design.

Modified to fit more compact spaces, the system features narrow treads, high risers and steep angles that make it similar in size to standard attic ladders, while incorporating the innovative action of lateral folding, and a surprising lightness of structure.

BCompact Design cleverly imagined a bamboo spar on the movable side with cutouts of holes for the hand. On request, a fixed, thin and short handrail is activated there for increased safety.

The international jury appreciates the space-saving solution and the sober appearance of the product. It emphasizes its relevance for city apartments, small studios, narrow hallways, lofts, attics, basements, mini-homes and more.

“My passion for invention, furniture and product design was born purely out of necessity.

Having lived in the high-priced and cramped conditions of Manhattan, NY for almost seven years; it was there that I realised I wanted to help people create the best possible living environments within the limitations of their available space.

After working on several interior projects for various friends and associates, I decided to enrole in the Furniture Design and Construction courses at Parsons School of Design to further develop my knowledge and skills.

I returned to Australia in 2002, and I took my studies even further at the Sydney Design Institute, to become an industrial designer. After graduating with honours, I worked as a freelancer for a few years until starting my own design practice in 2012. And Bcompact was born.”
